What does “FE-1” stand for?

It stands for Final Examination – First Part.

What are the FE-1s?

The FE-1s are the entrance exam to the Law Society of Ireland. If you wish to qualify as a solicitor in the Republic of Ireland, you must sit and pass this exam as part of the process to qualification.

Please visit the Law Society of Ireland website and check whether you are eligible to sit the FE-1s or are exempt.

How many exams are there?

There are 8 papers – Constitutional Law, Company Law, Equity, Contract Law, Criminal Law, Law of Torts, European Union Law and Property Law.

Are the FE-1s open book?

No, the FE-1s are not open book. However, there are certain legislative sources which you are permitted to bring into the exam. Please check this link to see which legislative sources are permitted.

How long are the FE-1s?

The FE-1s are 3 hours long. If you are sitting the exam online, you are permitted an extra 30 minutes in case you experience any technical difficulties.

How much are the FE-1 exams?

The FE-1s are currently €125 per subject. This fee is subject to change so please check the Law Society’s website for the the most up-to-date fees.

Where are the FE-1s held?

The FE-1s are held in an exam centre and online. When applying to sit a paper, you have the option of choosing whether you would like to take the exam in-person or online.

When are the FE-1s held?

The FE-1s are usually held in Spring (March) and Autumn (September/October) each year.
